Victoria, BC — The Greater Victoria Housing Society (GVHS) announced that it has proactively implemented a cost-of-living increase for its CUPE 1978 employees, retroactive to January 1, 2022.
“Our employees are our greatest asset and this wage increase reflects that the cost of living in Greater Victoria has increased significantly over the past year,” said Virginia Holden, Executive Director. “Given that Canada’s inflation rate is at a 30-year high, the real cost of living outstripped the planned annual increase of 2% this year, and we worked collaboratively with the Union to raise the amount offered to our unionized staff to allow them to better support their families and allow GVHS to remain competitive as an employer.”
Employees welcomed the announcement, which was offered as a flat dollar amount across all staffing levels to $1.25/hour.
GVHS is a trusted builder and provider of affordable housing with close to 1,300 tenants across 17 buildings in the Greater Victoria region, and 2021 marked its 65th year of operations. It contributes to healthy, thriving livable communities by providing affordable, secure rental homes for low to moderate income households.
